The Masters family endured difficult times during and just after the Civil War. Both James and his son Milton were killed during the war. Nancy and children were forced to leave their farm in pro Union Lawrence county and move to a nearby county friendly to Southern sympathizers. After the war they came back to their farm only to lose most of it to lawyers and squatters.     William Jordan married, second, Elizabeth Butler, daughter of John Price Butler and Esther Davis on 20 Jan 1876 in Clay Co., TN. She was Born 13 Aug 1839.

After William's death in 1879, his widow Elizabeth lived in his son Lee's household. The 1880 Census shows Lee Masters as head of household along with his stepmother Elizabeth, Coe - stepson, Monroe - step son, George - stepson and Modena as his daughter. The Census taker obviously did not mean to enter Modena as Lee's daughter.  Lee may have moved to Oregon with his wife who is unknown.  Elizabeth is thought to have died soon after the death of William Jordan. ⁸⁹

 Simeon Masters served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War.  He enlisted in Co., E of the 13th (Dibrell's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, which was organized on August 16, 1862 in Overton Co., TN.  Major battles fought included the Battle of Chickamauga.  The regiment was paroled on May 11, 1865 in Washington, Georgia.  The final roll showed 381 men present and accounted for out of the original 921 men mustered into service. ³²

In 1862 he enlisted in the Eighth Tennessee Cavalry, Co F, participating in the battle of Murfreesboro being taken prisoner at the battle of Parker's Cross Roads.  He was confined six months in Camp Douglass until exchanged then served the duration of the war primarily around Nashville. In 1880 he moved with his family to San Juan County Utah.  He lived there three years before moving to Baker County Oregon, where he died. ^A41 He purchased a farm in the Pocahontas district near Baker Bounty and was one of the successful farmers of the Powder River Valley. ³⁷

He married Mary Jane Maxwell in 1866. She was born 1845 ^A41 and Died  25 Aug 1926. ³⁷

Sy Thomps served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War. He enlisted in Co. B of the 4th (Murray's) Tennessee Cavalry Regiment which was organized in October of 1862 at Mill Creek in Putnam County.  This group later became known as the 22nd (Murray's) Tennessee Infantry Battalion.³²

iv.  Mary E. Masters (James ⁵, Hillery ⁴, Robert ³, William W.², Robert ¹) - Born 26 Dec 1831 ^A29 and died 1 Feb 1907.  She married Simeon Hinds, Dr., son of Simeon Hinds II and Elizabeth Stone, on 5 Jan 1856.  He was Born 29 Mar 1818 in Overton Co., TN and Died 10 Aug 1892 in Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN.  This was Dr. Hinds 2nd marriage, the 1st being to Margaret Gardenshire who died 26 Aug 1854. ³⁷

Zina Hinds was a highly respected druggist and owner of Hinds' Drug Store in Cookeville.  Their Children: Alma & Charles D. Hinds. ^A31

• ii.  James M. Hinds - Born ca 1860 in TN and Died 24 Jan 1906 in Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN. He was Buried in Cookeville City Cemetery, Putnam Co., TN. He served as postmaster of Cookeville during both of President Cleveland's administrations. ^A31

• iii.  John Stanton Hinds - Born ca 1865 in TN. He married Ida M. Morlan in 1887 at Gentry, AR. She was born 13 Jan 1870 in Des Moines, IA and Died 8 Sep 1966 in Bellingham, WA. They were buried in the Bayview Cemetery in Washington. John Stanton Hinds left Tennessee in the late 1800's and settled in Bellingham, Whatcom Co., WA by 1901.  He was an engineer and while in Bellingham was bridge foreman for the Northern Pacific Railroad.  Their children: Walter Clyde, Minerva "Minnie" Grace, Winnifred "Winnie" Mary, Erma Lucille, Garnet Kathleen, John Morlan, Luther, Jimmy & Ethel Ruth "Dimples" Hinds. ^A30

  

• iv.  Mary E. Hinds - Born 10 Jun 1865 in TN and Died 20 Jan 1941 in Cookeville, Putnam Co., TN with burial in Cookeville City Cemetery, Putnam Co., TN. She never married. Mary served as assistant postmaster of Cookeville throughout the two terms of her brother, James M. Hinds as postmaster. ^A30

  

• v.  Emma S. Hinds - Born14 Jan 1868 in TN and Died 18 Mar 1927 in Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., TN. She married Elmore "Burr" James on 15 Jan 1902. He was Born 6 Aug 1859 in Statesville, Wilson Co., TN and Died 9 Sep 1926.  Both are buried in Milton Cemetery, Rutherford Co., TN.  Emma Hinds went to McFerrin College in Martin, TN where she earned a degree in Music in 1898.  They lived with their children in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  Their children: Elmore Burr James Jr., & James Butler James. ^A29
