• v.  James Bartlee "Jim" Masters - Born 19 Jan 1836 in Overton Co., TN. He died 22 Jul 1918 in Jackson Co., TN.  Burial in New Hope Cem., Jackson Co., TN.¹⁰⁰ Jim was said to be a shoemaker and made shoes for both sides in the Civil War.  The 1880 Census listed him as a brick mason.  The initial "B." may have stood for Bartee¹⁸⁴ or Barton.¹⁸⁵  Jim Cleared the land and built a log house which still stands.  The site is between Standing Stone road and Highway 85 near Old Union Church in Overton Co., TN.²⁶, ³³⁵

  • vii.  James "Jimmy" Lee Masters - Born 1871.⁷⁹ He married, first, Belle Taylor.  She was born circa 1880.¹⁷⁹ They had two children: Charlie ⁷⁷ and Birdwell Benton Masters. ¹⁸¹ The two boys are shown in the Columbus Allen Household in the 1910 census with mother Belle. There are probably more children but little is known about this family, even by Jimmy Lee's grandchildren.¹⁸⁵

    He married, second, Laura Barnes, circa 1924.¹⁹² Dave's death due to flu and pneumonia, left Laura pregnant as well as Dave's children by his first wife to care for.  The end result was the children going to relatives to live.  Those known are: Ila to "Will" Masters, Maude to "Mat" Masters, Goldie to John Masters, Edna to Walter Masters and Mary to "Wash" Masters.^{104 , 185} "Dave" and Laura's only child was Minus L. • vii.  John H. Masters (John S. ⁵, Hillery ⁴, Robert ³, William W.², Robert ¹) - Born 16 Sep 1840 in Overton Co., TN. He was the photographer responsible for many Civil War era family images. John H. Masters came North to Illinois after the war and unwittingly traded his camera for a stolen horse. He was acquitted of theft but shortly thereafter he disappeared and no one has ever known his eventual fate. ⁴
